Why are the ‘Bosnia-Croatia’ footballers so popular?
The new Bosnian national team will not feature in this weekend’s World Cup qualifier in San Francisco, but that hasn’t stopped some fans from celebrating their team’s success.
Croatian striker Radja Nainggolan scored the winning goal in the last minute to hand the home side a 2-1 victory over the United States at San Francisco’s AT&T Park on Saturday.
The match has drawn thousands of fans from around the world, with thousands more coming to the game.
Nainggola has scored four goals in his last six matches and has become the most popular Bosnian striker.
The team’s performance at the game has been impressive and has been described as “one of the best performances in international football history”.
“The team has been playing in front of great crowds and we have achieved great results in the tournament,” said former president and current team-mate Radja Nedved.
“The fans have supported us and they are always the best supporters in the world.
I am sure that they are still there.”
The Bosnian football association (DPA) said it was pleased to see that the match was so popular and had been sold out.
“This is a fantastic result for the Bosnian team and the national team, the country has come through a tough time,” said DPA President Tijana Mijatovic.
“It is good to see so many people cheering on the team.”DPA president and former president Mijatić said the team’s achievements at the tournament had shown the Bosnians “their place”.
“We can see that people still want to play for the national side.
The Bosnian team has had great success and the fans are still coming to watch,” he said.”
They are always ready for a new challenge.”
The winning goal came on the stroke of half-time, when Radja Neytirić scored the second of his two goals to make it 2-0.
